T-NAIVE

STYLE/LINK:VAN DER GRAAF GEN.

The first CD we received on Galileo label was an absolutely corking instrumental prog-rock CD by a group called Xang whose virtues we soundly extolled (and still do). Then came a more traditional song-based album by Metaphor with a pronounced Genesis influence, and that was tipped to succeed, and it did. But then the rot set in and things took a bit of a nosedive with three very ordinary (at best) releases by Forgotten Sun, Scythe & Thonk. So, we now arrive at release number six, and approach it with a certain amount of trepidation – has things continued to slide or has a rescue job be mounted? As you know, we tell it like it is, click that extra info link and read on…

RE-WORKS (21ST CENTURY AMBIENT RECONSTRUCTIONS)

STYLE/LINK:EMERSON LAKE PALMER

Getting right to the point, this triple album consists of Ambient, Trance, Dub and Techno Electronic Music – It is not prog-rock in any shape or form, but the source material is Emerson Lake & Palmer, so that is why you find it in this section! The tongue-in-cheek title is actually a little erroneous – It should be called ‘Re-Constructions’, for what it does is use certain sections - a riff, a refrain, a chord sequence, a line of lyric, a rhythmic backdrop - just tiny fragments of the original ELP composition, and then use that as the pivot around which the rest of the track is built. Now, bear in mind that almost every track is in reality about 10% ELP and 90% the re-mixer’s work, so, it’s not a prog-rock album – not by any stretch of the imagination, and so lord only knows what ELP fans will make of it? It is essentially an ambient music album that has ambient dub running through the heart of it, with glimpses of trance and break-beat filtered in along the way - Firmly and squarely, this is an ‘Electronic Music’ album, but, as such, is it any good? Well, it ok, but the ELP presence is probably not what ‘New Millennium’ electronic music audience will want. For once, I can’t say “collectors only” or “ambient fans only” since I simply cannot imagine who’s going to get what out of it. Will it sell? – Well yes, if only to crazed ELP-heads, but it will sell. Value? For sure! Quality? Superb! Enjoyable? Don’t ask!

MORE RELICS (9 FLOYD CLASSICS-R.P.W.L. & OTHERS)

STYLE/LINK:PINK FLOYD

From the same label that gave you the remarkable Pink Floyd tribute album ‘Signs Of Life’ comes this second album, and it is just sensational! If you’re going to ask “do I really need another tribute album”? - The answer on the evidence of every single track on this CD is a resounding “YES”. The musicians involved are: synth music maestro Rudiger Gleisberg, UK psych-rock group Mr Quimby’s Beard, Floyd-influenced super-band RPWL, Solar Project (do a stunning take on ‘Echoes’, all of it!), Fantasyy Factoryy, Liquid Visions, Sula Bassana and Masterkey ends the set with the anthemic ‘Eclipse’ from ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ album. All but one of the tracks stays largely true to the instrumentation and arrangements of the Floyd originals. All the tracks are absolutely superb, and yet again, the sort that you really would want to put on as well, or even instead of, a Floyd album, when the mood strikes you, which, in this case, will be often. This CD is a total triumph – Treat yourself to it and derive hours and hours of endless pleasure and enjoyment from the music it holds. Click the extra info link for a track-by-track review.

SONGS OF PINK FLOYD (SQUIRE/SHERWOOD/SHAW/KAY ETC)

STYLE/LINK:PINK FLOYD

After a series of good and not so good attempts to cover the Floyd by a series of semi-well know and total unknown names, now it’s the turn of the big boys of rock to turn in their interpretations of the might Pink Floyd’s material.

The full title is: ‘An All Star Line-Up Performing The Songs Of Pink Floyd’ - You’d have thought they could have come up with a snappier title than this – still it does at least state its case fairly and squarely before you start. So, first a bit of looking back… We had the amazing ‘Signs Of Life’ tribute album, which was greeted fairly unanimously by Floyd, prog and rock fans alike as being a breath of fresh air. Then came ‘More Relics’, this time focussing on the longer, more instrumental sides of the band’s music (worth its price for its incredible versions of ‘Saucerful Of Secrets’ & ‘Echoes’ alone) and this was also greeted with a ‘thumbs up’ by most who bought it. Now we have this – yet another Floyd tribute CD, but is it a tribute too far? With Chris Squire, Billy Sherwood, Alan White, Steve Lukather, Tony Levin and Tommy Shaw on it, you would hope so - Click on the extra info link and lets’ see...

LIVE & ACOUSTIC (INCLUDES GENESIS/GABRIEL COVERS)

STYLE/LINK:GENESIS

18 tracks from the new (last) Genesis front man, recorded ‘live’ at the Edinburgh Festival. It’s a seventy-minute, warts’n’all performance mix of his own self penned songs and acoustic covers of Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins songs like ‘In The Air Tonight’, ‘Lovers Leap (Supper’s Ready)’, ‘Carpet Crawlers’, ‘Mama’, plus a bit of Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, all sung brilliantly.
