ECHOES FROM THE OCEAN (MINI ALBUM-JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

The second Japanese mini-album, this time from 1999 and featuring one brand new track, 'Rhapsody' (an absolutely belting rock-prog anthem if ever there was one), one that would have been played to death on every radio show across the land, had it been the mid-80's, and surely would have been a top ten hit. Three of the other four tracks are all alternative versions of tracks from the ‘Queen Of The Ocean’ album, including the grandiose 1999 remix of ‘Escher’s Staircase’, the gratuitously extended ‘Long Echoes’ version of the epic rocker ‘Frankenstein Unbound’ and an early version of ‘Without You’, plus you get the original 1995 version of Lana’s AOR classic ‘Through The Fire’. These alternative versions all paint a quite different picture to the corresponding tracks on the original album, but all are as consistent as you'd expect, with some interesting new arrangements from the band, who remain as hot as ever. A superb way to spend thirty-three minutes, and as you'd expect from the Japanese, the solid bodied, fold-out digi-pak packaging is nothing short of incredible.

GARDEN OF THE MOON

SONG-BASED (PROG)

This reissue of the original album comes in a slim-line case with a full-colour 20-page booklet and extensive liner notes by Erik Norlander. The bonus disc is a full-length album of ‘live’ tracks, remixes, new songs and early versions, all coming from the same period of the band’s history as ‘Garden’, and includes tracks from both Jap only ‘Echoes from…’ mini-albums. When ‘Garden Of The Moon’, the 3rd Lane Lane album was first issued in 1998, it was to be her breakthrough album - the one that brought her enormous popularity in Japan. It is nothing short of absolutely sensational from start to finish - Everything about it is absolutely spot on - From the powerful, superbly written / performed songs, through riffing and soloing guitars to the rich, contrasting and expressive luxurious textural work of Norlander’s keyboards. A muscular and propulsive rhythm section and practically perfect production topped it all off perfectly. Everything was there to make this one of the most powerful and dynamic quality rock albums of the decade, but it only really happened for them in Japan. 10 out of 10 in anyone's language!

LIVE IN JAPAN-1998 (JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

Recorded on their tour of Japan in April 1998 just after the immaculate ‘Garden Of The Moon’ was released, and issued in the summer of the same year, this album is nothing short of jaw-dropping delight from start to finish. The album contains a balanced selection of 11 unforgettable songs from the first four studio albums, and those who are aware of these recordings might be excused for thinking that with all the technological advances of the day, that there's no way that this band and this vocalist are going to be able to re-create the rich tapestries of instrumentation, solid arrangements and the pure depth of production that they had achieved on studio albums ‘in concert’ – But you'd be wrong - incredibly, unutterably and most definitely wrong! This album has to be one of THE best sounding ‘live’ recordings I’ve heard. It has been arranged, played and produced in a manner that will rival any ‘live’ rock album of the 90's. With the synths, guitars, bass and drums cooking, scorching, soaring and flying behind her, this set more than anything else shows that this lady can really sing. Her vocals sound as fabulous in a ‘live’ setting as they do in the studio. Not only that, but there's an added sense of urgency and energy present that you only get in a ‘live’ setting, and this can often be absent from the more polished studio offerings of most big bands. Every member of the band plays their heart out, including Rocket Scientists' main man Mark McCrite on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, with lead guitarist Neil Citron and keyboards wizard Erik Norlander putting in fabulous ensemble work, duels and smokin' leads over the fluid but rock solid rhythm section work from Tommy Amato & Don Schiff. Overall, more than an hour of guaranteed ‘live’ excitement, with the solos taken up a notch or two, and you can't say fairer than that. There’s a bonus track too, in the shape of a special acoustic performance of ‘Through The Fire’.

LOVE IS AN ILLUSION (3 BONUS TRACKS)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

An enhanced double disc version of Lana Lane’s 1995 debut album, featuring the original, untouched version of the CD on disc 2, plus a remixed enhanced version of it on the disc 1, with 3 bonus tracks. It comes in a special slim-line package that includes a 16 page, full colour booklet with extensive new sleeve notes by Erik Norlander. The album is just a dead ringer for classic Heart, complete with similar vocal styling, excellent songs and an astoundingly good selection of well-produced commercial hard rock it is. At the end of 1998, it was completely remixed, new musical sections were inserted into the old songs and the track list was expanded. So, what's it like now? It has undergone what can only be described as a radical facelift. It now holds 13 tracks, three of which (‘Liaa Interlude’, ‘A Night In The Garden’ and ‘Into The Ether’) have been added to the original 10. The whole album now sounds so vibrant - It's like someone's taken several layers of musical mud off the original and injected it with the same magic potion that was used in the subsequent albums. The result is a solid, polished, passionate set of songs with the instrumental workouts coming out as clear as a bell. The production and arrangements are at top notch, the delivery on fire, and the songs are as consistent and varied as they come. There’s a notable psychedelic Beatles influence on track 3, and touches of vintage Heart elsewhere, but otherwise it is just one astoundingly good set of tracks that roar and fly through your head, without a poor moment on the entire disc.

(Please note: There is an alternative Japanese single CD version of this album available that features only the remixed music, and you can order this using stock number: 790520)

PROJECT SHANGRI-LA (+1 BONUS UNRELEASED TRACK-JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

The 6th studio album from America’s symphonic-rock diva, and talk about monumental – this has to be the best yet! It’s powerful, as you’d expect, but the seriously heavy rocking, so evident on the ‘Secrets Of Astrology’ album, has been enhanced, altered – but not by anything physical. The keyboard work too is a total sensation, showcasing some incredible moments from the Mellotron, Hammond organ and Moog Modular synthesizer. There’s an assured confidence to these performances, one that seems to have at the back of it some kind of determination to make the solid and intricately structured songs work like never before. It’s only when you read the sleeve-notes, to find that this album was actually being recorded during the events of September 11th 2001 that you suddenly see it all!

QUEEN OF THE OCEAN (1 BONUS TRACK-JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

Now this is seriously amazing... we're talking hot stuff here!  The predecessor to this album was the excellent ‘Garden Of The Moon’ - a piece of pure excellence, but this new one from 1999 takes the word 'perfection' to even greater heights, and no messing. This is ‘AOR’, ‘Rock’, ‘Prog-Rock’ all rolled into one - Sheer unadulterated quality songs in one magnificent, mighty potent brew with an absolutely immense sound and vast production, featuring playing to take your breath away and vocals that make you go weak at the knees. Just witness the ten minute self-titled 3rd track for proof of this power and passion, as though Heart were playing ‘Rainbow Rising’ but with a mix of finesse, dynamics, power and emotion that far outshines either, and both were class acts to start with. This is an album of solid, flowing, to quality songs featuring incendiary guitar work, keyboards that form tower blocks for backdrops, and a crisp, rock hard, yet fluid rhythm section. These 11 tracks (plus the bonus title for this Jap pressing) build and develop into high-flying AOR-intensity with choruses to die for and fantastic harmony vocals amid the soaring solo vocal of the voice that IS Lana Lane. Many of these songs are real barnstormers with strength and feel you just won't believe until you've experienced them for yourself. It all goes to makes this one of these very special albums in the Rock / AOR / Prog crossover fields. Essential? - You'd better believe it!

(Please note: The is a slightly cheaper alternative version of this album available that you can order using stock number: 897846, but that version will not feature the bonus track on this CD!)
