BALLAD COLLECTION I (JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

OK - I know what you're thinking - prog-rock energy subsiding into the depths of wimpy songs, all very pretty and drippy but lacking any real substance… WRONG! This is a superlative collection of songs, way more varied than you'd credit, with arrangements from acoustic, electro-acoustic and electric and all with a richness of tone and subtlety that will have you sitting there with your eyes wide open and an aching in your heart. It’s a collection of passionately felt songs delivered songs that unfold breathtakingly and to a beautiful extent. There are new songs recorded in late 1998, radically reworked songs from the ‘Curious Goods’ CD, with every other track either a remix or a completely new recording. There are two Rocket Scientist re-works in the form of ‘Avalon’ and ‘Stardust’, and she covers songs by The Beatles, David Gates and Jeff Lynne to name just a few. The vocal delivery is just superb while the band positively sizzle, with some of the most impassioned playing you’ll hear, amid a really huge production and arrangements that stretch far beyond the horizons. A dream album for anyone into AOR, full-feeling prog and strong songs delivered with all the feeling and love in the world.

BALLAD COLLECTION I/II (BONUS TRACK)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

This double disc set contains both volumes of the Japanese ‘Ballad Collection’ albums, and features as a bonus track, a cover version of Marillion’s ‘Season’s End’ which was only ever available in Japan. Other tracks include covers of The Beatles‘Across The Universe’, the David Gates epic ‘Clouds’, Jeff Lynne’s ‘When Time Stood Still’, Graham Nash’s ‘Wind On The Water’, Dan Fogelberg’s ‘Netherlands’ and Elton John’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ as well as many self written titles. All the tracks were recorded in 2000 after the ‘Secrets Of Astrology’ album and concentrate more on the cohesive song side of the band rather than any wild rockers. Musically, quality-wise and in all areas, this is right up there with the finest albums she has made, again proving that she possesses one of the finest voices in the rock biz. Her self-penned ballads stand up well beside all the other songs on the album from the ranks of the major artist league. Her band is right up there with the best of them, and the glorious, amazingly produced keyboard arrangements from husband Erik Norlander’s mighty Mellotrons and synths provide fantastic orchestral backdrops for each of the songs. This really is a brilliant album that will appeal to fans of all good music in general, and an amazing value for money package that of course comes highly recommended. Superb!

BALLAD COLLECTION II (JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

Lana’s second volume of big rock ballads was recorded in 2000. The CD contains 13 more lovingly created pieces that are made up on 8 covers of songs by the likes of Graham Nash, David Crosby, Dan Fogelberg & Elton John as well as 5 more original songs. It’s an excellent audiophile recording featuring members of the Rocket Scientists in the backing band, plus more of the sensational orchestral keyboard arrangements created on husband Erik Norlander’s synths, organs and Mellotrons. Again, the vocal delivery on this second set on ballads is just amazing.

BEST OF LANA LANE [1995-1999] (JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

Lana Lane is HUGE in Japan, but has yet to make her mark to the same degree in Europe, and albums like this can only enhance here chances of making it big in mainland Europe too. She and her band are together a symphonic-rock sensation, and with husband Erik Norlander as keyboards player and arranger 'par excellence' at the helm, this husband and wife team make for a formidable working relationship. Electric guitarist supremo Neil Citron and a remarkably tight, driving rhythm section are also a vital part of this partnership, and between them, the compositions on this CD just ooze class, energy, sheen, enthusiasm and passion, with a quality of production that you'll find hard to equal on any other rock-prog album on the planet right now. Selections from her ‘95 debut, ‘Love Is An Illusion’, through to the ‘99 ‘Queen Of The Ocean’ set are featured, including classics like ‘Symphony Of Angels’, ‘Escher’s Staircase’, ‘Seasons’, ‘Under The Olive Tree’, ‘Avalon’, ‘Through The Fire’ and ‘Destination Roswell’, plus, as a bonus, you get an exclusive nine and a half minute, smoking ‘live’ rendition of King Crimson's classic 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' - Classic prog delivered to perfection by a band that can really whip up a heady prog brew. So, if you're new to Lana Lane and need a place to start, this is as good a sampler as you’ll get. The packaging is fantastic, with lyrics, track info, pictures etc, but the selection of songs is nothing short of amazing – This is music that positively leaps from the speakers and fills the room with huge sounds, as the keyboards fly and the guitars burn, but it’s those incredibly strong, beautiful vocals will turn your heart to jelly. From out and out rockers, through masterpieces of prog-rock, to ballads, this is both mighty and special and way above any standard rock-prog act.

CURIOUS GOODS (BONUS TRACK)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

This year 2002 enhanced double disc version of the 1996 album features the original, untouched version of the CD on disc 2, plus the newly re-mixed enhanced version on disc 1. It comes in a special slim-line case with a 16 page, full colour booklet and extensive sleeve notes by Erik Norlander. A cover version of James Bond theme: ‘You Only Live Twice’, recorded during the ‘Project Shangri-La’ sessions, has been added as a bonus track. Musically, the styles on the original ‘Curious Goods’ album range from grand keyboard-dominated instrumental interludes through to a central framework of songs that are effectively souped-up AOR with female vocals. The lyrics and compositional structure are good, the arrangements are dynamic solid and vast, with adrenaline-fuelled guitars that move from riffing to sensitive soloing. Add to this a twist on prog-rock, plus some more variation in musical styles, and what is in essence, an AOR CD, becomes something for fans on both sides of the fence. So how does the new mix sound…?

ECHOES FROM THE GARDEN (MINI ALBUM-JAP)

SONG-BASED (PROG)

This is a 1998 Japanese only release featuring exclusive tracks and remixes from just after the ‘Gardens Of The Moon’ album sessions. What you get here is nearly thirty-four minutes of typically consistent Lana Lane material, much of it less overtly heavy than the material on the ‘Gardens’ album, with more keyboards and exotic arrangements. Track-wise, you’ll find two reworks from the ‘Gardens’ album, one brand new song, a cover version exclusive to this CD and two re-mixed tracks from the ‘Love Is An Illusion’ album. OK, so it’s relatively expensive for what it is (although some full-price UK albums last less than this does, and the price is the same), but it comes in special digi-pak packaging, and the quality of the music is as consistent as ever, with all the right ingredients firmly in place. We feel that, like the equally limited, ‘Echoes From The Moon’, this is an essential addition to any Lana Lane collection, particularly if you want to ensure you have everything that she has available.
