BACK FROM THE ZONE

CLASSIC (PROG)

Let’s go back through the mists of time to 1983, where a prog-rock revival was taking place, led by bands like Marillion and Pallas. In their wake came another wave of talented bands like Pendragon, Twelfth Night and IQ. Running alongside them were a number of equally talented bands that failed to get record deals and really never got past the first hurdle – Bands such as Mach 1 & Tamarisk, and one of the best of them was – Abel Ganz.

It’s a poignant title that’s been given to this amazing 80’s Scottish band’s first official CD, because here they are re-emerging from the distant past with a ‘retrospective’ album that mixes a lot of the old with some of the new. ‘Zone’ is essential listening for all prog and neo-prog fans alike, especially those into bands like IQ or Pallas (with whom they share a vocalist). The disc spans a generous sixty-five minutes and features two tracks from the first cassette album: ‘Gratuitous Flash’, one from their second release, ‘Gullible’s Travels’ and two from the third cassette, ‘Danger Of Strangers’. There are two surprise 2001 tracks - One a reworking of an older piece and the other a brand new track. So, yes!! – Abel Ganz is alive and well and releasing a CD to prove it! Musically it’s classic prog in the strongest sense of the word, mixing class playing with great song-writing and coming up with 8 brilliant tracks that will be well appreciated by progressive fans everywhere.  To reach deeper into the album, click the extra info link below.

XTRAKCTS & ARTIFAKCTS (INSTRUMENTAL)

STYLE/LINK:KING CRIMSON

The instrumental project of Pat Mastelotto & Bill Munyon and it is brim full with people from the current incarnation of King Crimson, so that gives you some indication of what to expect musically before you place the CD in the player, and once it’s in there – All hell breaks loose!  The album is pretty much all-instrumental, and it really is, just fantastic! A near hour long veritable powerhouse of explosive music from start to finish, with sensational rhythms powered by Tony Levin’s deep, bowel-erupting bass lines, with cracking guitar work from Robert Fripp, plus a gamut of sounds, textures, layers, samples, solos and treatments that are nothing short of jaw-dropping. These are 14 wild tracks, all with a storm force wall of sound that you don’t often experience in prog-rock  – It is an unstoppable musical juggernaut full of great things, travelling at speed in a varied, yet cohesive framework of styles. This is what it’s all about - One of the finest albums of it’s type I’ve heard in ages. You listen in amazement and stare open-mouthed, wondering if it’s going to take you apart at any minute! The packaging is excellent and the cover artwork provides some relief of the lighter variety, with its sensationally amusing booklet/poster - is just so funny!

RUDY'S JOURNEY (FEATURES:MICHAEL SADLER OF SAGA)

MELODIC (PROG)

A concept album featuring, among its many contributors, one Michael Sadler of Saga, who has 3 vocal tracks on his own and 2 shared with the equally amazing Michele Young. Most of the songs have a commercial leaning with strong melody lines and memorable choruses. The music is written and played by Rudi Buttas on guitar with his band consisting of keyboards, flutes, bass and drums. All 14 tracks have strong melodic hooks and catchy choruses, a little bit like Saga in many ways, especially when Sadler is doing the vocal parts. Michelle Young’s vocals sound similar to her own Kate Bush-like style on the ballads, but on the rockier tracks she sounds less Bush and pure pre American A.O.R. You will also find other influences as the album plays though, especially the near three-minute track 13, called ‘Just Pink Friends’, and it’s a dead ringer for ‘Wish You Were Here’ period Pink Floyd with its long Gilmour-esque guitar lead intro to the shortest vocal part known to man. Instrumentally, the overall feel of the album is of something between Saga and Floyd, with melody, strong lyrics and an excellent production being the guiding force throughout, with the pace moving from powerful rockers to mellow ballads. There are 14 tracks in all to spread over the hour...plus playing time,  including a long version of the excellent: ‘Radio’ (the shorter version is Sadler’s first vocal track on the album) to close the album. Overall, if you albums full of memorable tunes, with good songs well sung and well produced, you won’t go far wrong with this one.

CG 3 + 2 (INC COVER OF YES:HEART OF THE SUNRISE)

STYLE/LINK:KING CRIMSON

New studio album and it features Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto. Right from the start you breathe a sigh of relief – ah yes, bass and drums – hallelujah! You see, to many people, what started out as a neat idea seemed rapidly to turn into a one-trick pony type of thing as the guitar trio would unleash album after album of “the same sort of thing”. Now, we have a new album with the trademark and, it has to be said, rather fine guitar interplay, only this time with a dynamic backbone care of the rhythm section from King Crimson, now turning this musical idea into something genuinely riveting and well worth your while. So confident is this new incarnation, that they even turn their attentions to a couple of classic tunes from the 70’s, the most amazing of which is a seven-minute rendition of the Yes classic: ‘Heart Of The Sunrise’ from the band’s ‘Fragile’ album!  If you want to know how it sounds, click the extra info link.

MERCURY+NEPTUNE (CDR-2 CULT MELLOTRON ONLY ALBUMS)

MELLOTRON BASED (PROG)

In search of the ultimate Mellotron album? Well, here’s an unusual one CD featuring two cult status albums that were created using only Mellotrons! Along time ago, in a land, far, far away, there lived a musician by the name of Celluloid. He was an enigma – a recluse who wouldn’t write, wouldn’t contact or get in touch in any way until one day he phoned me, and that one call went on for ages and ages, and talking in hushed tones, he told me that he was sure he was being followed, and other such dark stories. In short, the guy was bizarre, but the thing was, he was a Mellotron nut – the machine was virtually all he used! The first thing he put out was the ‘Mercury’ album, at the time, something I found quite riveting, being an instrumental album performed entirely on computer and Mellotron, full of vast sounding waves of synth-like cosmic music and Tron-performed full-sounding passages, a sort of mix of Synergy’s ‘Computer Experiments’ and Edgar Froese’s ‘Epsilon In Malaysian Pale’ albums. The time was the early 80’s and it was an unusual musical trip to say the least, but now, twenty years on, it sounds fantastic - Easily accessible, the record had healthy doses of Tron, and it was a very warm, full sounding recording that I found totally intriguing. It sold a few and then quickly disappeared, but luckily, Celluloid didn’t! After that the first LP, I mentioned to him that I would have loved to hear more Mellotron (!!!) on that first LP, so what did he do – only go and present me with a second album made ENTIRELY on the thing – and it remains a total classic of the instrument to this day. The whole of that album, ‘Neptune’, is also featured on this CD, and anyone into Mellotrons just has to get it, because it is a total delight from start to finish – I even got to play it on Signal Radio in Staffordshire at one point! If you are into Mellotrons, then you really have to get this album – Its not the most musical example of the instrument at work that you’ll hear, but it has a charm that has made it part of my life for nearly 20 years – so now, let it be a part of yours for as long – because it is totally timeless!
